Invention Ideas-Where do they come from?

Over the past Thirty Two years, I have been privledged, to talk to hundreds of inventors. Invaribly, our talks always involve, “How did you come up with the idea for some of your inventions? Consensus seems to be: There is no set formula to coming up with ideas, but many times, ideas for new or improved products are related to what the Inventors primary job is. That is not to say, that Inventing is only a part time job, as it can quickly become a full time endeavor. The one area that appears to differ somewhat from being “job” related, is the myriad of inventions involving tasks in and around the Home. Apparently, being an everyday environment, some people are more attuned to what is involved in many of these tasks, and by simple observation, figure out newer and better methods to accomplish those tasks. Oft times, improvising a make shift device to do a task will lead, to an improved product or many times it will lead to new and innovative stand alone products. Actually, as outlined above, there is no set formula to inventing, but a bit of the quisitive mind always is helpful. I have talked with others in our Field of inventing, and in verbally going over what the other person is attempting to create, we come up with a method or design that compliments the original idea, and it comes closer to reality. Inventing can become a wonderland for your mind and curiosity to run free, and many times will lead to a question of “Why does a device have to work that way” Or why can I not make a modification and make it even better? Believe me, when I say, The sheer exhilaration of knowing that you have came up with the idea for a new or improved invention, can be very intoxicating. First inclination is to share your idea with others. That is definetly a NO-NO. There are critical decisions that now need to be made concerning the future of your invention, and all should be of utmost confidentiality. That aspect I will cover in coming posts.
